Friulano San Pietro
2022
The I Clivi wines never cease to impress us with their purity, poise, and ability to age gracefully. The estate was founded by Ferdinando Zanusso and is managed today by his son Mario. The steep, terraced vineyards in two growing districts of Friuli: Colli Orientali and Collio are planted with old vines of Friulano, Malvasia Istriana, Ribolla, and Verduzzo. While each grape expresses itself differently, there is a common denominator to all IClivi wines—they always reveal something more than just a primary fruit. Mario’s vines are incredibly low yielding and planted on calcareous soil, in local dialect called “ponca”—packed with fossilized shells, which give the wines a strong mineral backbone. Mario farms organically and vinifies his wines in a minimalistic way. This year, we are very excited to tell you about a new wine that joins the iClivi range. It is a special red made with the rare variety Schioppettino (aka Ribolla Nera). It comes from a 50-year-old, southeast-facing plot in Prepotto and has the signature delicacy of iClivi wines—saline and subtly layered with red cherry, wild herbs, and peppercorns. A joy to drink with only 12.5% alcohol!
